Idols winner focuses on debut album

AFTER months of being busy with M- Net’s Clash of the Choirs, multi-talented musician Khaya Mthethwa is now giving attention to his fans and promoting his award-winning debut album.

After winning Idols SA last year, Mthethwa released his album For You, which has been enjoying airplay on national radio stations.

“I just had to come to East London, I have loyal fans here and I am grateful for that,” he said.

Although the album has enjoyed great support, the promotion of the album has only kick-started as the 26- year-old artist has been busy with other productions including the recording of Joyous Celebration 17 and Clash of the Choirs.

His talented youth choir from KwaZulu-Natal won the Clash of the Choirs competition recently walking away with R500000, where R250000 was donated to the charity of their choice and R250000 was for them.

“I love music and everything about it, I live music and I’m always grateful for the support I receive from children up to the elderly. It is amazing,” he said.

He described his album as a young, “soulish” and R&B album with a touch of gospel feel to it. “I am a person who is always open to new creative ideas. I wanted to show people a different side of me and in return I hoped they would appreciate the music,” Khaya said.

His 13-track album has been nominated on three categories in the South African Music Awards for best newcomer, best R&B and the record of the year for his single Move .

He scooped the best newcomer award in February at the Metro Fm Awards and is hoping to take more awards at the Sama’s next month .

Asked about the award he was hoping to take home next month he said: “I am hoping to win the R&B category, I wouldn’t mind taking the Record of the Year as well that is the biggest award in the industry, it opens doors and even being nominated on that category is a huge thing for me.”

The album promises to be a reflection on different kinds of relationships.

On the album he has worked with neo-soul artist Kabomo and Proverb among other artists.

His hierarchy is God first, family and Team Khaya who have been a great support in his blossoming career.

“I am counting on Team Khaya again in the Sama’s, Oh God yes. I don’t think I would be where I am today without the support of Team Khaya,” he said.

His national music tour is set to take place in July. —
