Legend’s son Phila was born to perform

PHILA Madlingozi always knew he would join the entertainment industry – after all, he is the son of singer, songwriter and producer Ringo Madlingozi.

And, as if that is not enough, he is also the nephew of Mxolisi Lokwe, also known as MXO.

“I always thought I was going to break into the entertainment industry with my music. I grew up in a musical family and, at an early age, I joined the primary school choir,” he said.

The 24-year old KwaDwesi-born performer has become k nown for his role as Zolile, a marketing student from the Eastern Cape at the centre of a love triangle in the award-winning drama Intersexions.

The story is all about “the little secrets that cause the biggest damage in people’s lives. Intersexions just shows how easy it is to be HIV positive,” he said.

Madlingozi said growing up as a “celebrity kid” being the son of a popular musician, “the best life coach and a brilliant musician”, was torture. “You do not actually make friends like other kids. I am glad I finally have my own voice and I feel like I have a lot to say, something that I will be able to do through my music.”

The Eastern Cape has talented musicians who need support from provincial government, he said. “For my birthday, I plan an October Port Elizabeth show where I will invite two PE artists to be the opening act.”
