Radio station powers up top team

POWER FM is beefing up its line-up with television presenter Masechaba Lekalake set to host a prime time slot.

The Gauteng talk radio station is going all out to enlist a star-studded team. Lekalake, who currently hosts youth talk show One Day Leader on SABC1, was cagey when contacted by the media.

“I’m very happy with the direction my career is taking and I think South Africa will be pleasantly surprised,” she said.

Lekalake refused to confirm whether she would be joining the radio station, but a source confirmed that she would present one of the major slots.

While all employees were expected to report for work at Power FM premises in Sandton on Monday, only journalist and radio personality Asanda Magaqa and sports presenter Thabiso Mosiya were seen by journalists. Another source said all the high- profile presenters met at a different venue to avoid the media’s prying eyes.

The source explained the delay in the station going on air was because of the transmission challenges in Soweto, Power FM’s biggest market. Initially expected to launch this month, it will reportedly go on air in July. The source added: “I respect the station’s decision-makers for postponing the launch of the station to sort out its issues.”

Chairman of MSG Africa Investment Holdings, Given Mkhari, said a full announcement would be made in due time, when they would “communicate the personalities joining the Power FM line-up”.
