Star roles for two polished actors in Mzantsi drama

TWO Eastern Cape actors are making waves on the small screen in the new Mzantsi Magic drama series, Zabalaza.

At first they seem to have it all but, as the story unfolds, secrets emerge, promises are broken and the Celes start turning on one another.

Msutwana plays the eldest daughter in the family and Mkangisa the youngest.

Msutwana said her character Lindiwe, a controlling, business-mind ed woman who “is always involved in other people’s business but she means well”. She is similar to Akua, whom Mutswana played in her previous character on SABC’s Society – both determined businesswomen, “but where Akua craved a relationship and wanted to have a social life Lindiwe does not care about either. All she cares about is keeping her family together,” she said.

The Zwelitsha-born actress enrolled for a performer’s diploma in speech and drama at the Uni versity of Cape Town, where she was cast in such plays as The Suit, King Lear and On the Brink.

Her big break came when she moved to Johannesburg in 2005. Within a week she had a place on Soul City and starred alongside such renowned actors like Lillian Dube.

She has appeared in television pro ductions Mthunzini.com, Isidingo, White Wedding and Society. She is currently shooting Zabalaza.

Peddie-born Mkangisa plays Msut wana’s younger sister on the show. Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch this week, Mkangisa said she plays Mpilo, her character, is a young adult who is taking a gap year after matric.

“She wants to be a professional drag racer. It’s rare for a girl from Soweto to choose that and her parents want her to go to university and get a de gree,” she said.

Mkangisa said they were working with many well-known actors. “It’s amazing being part of the cast. It’s very exciting for me and I’m learning a lot from the other actors. Many in the cast have made names for themselves –in the industry; Seputla, who plays my father, and Baby Cele who plays my mother, are some of the best in the industry,” she said.

Mkangisa has a part on SABC 1’s Zone 14 where she plays Asanda and also a role in Intersexions.

She started as a TV presenter on SABC1’s YoTV.

She’s also just been appointed brand ambas sador for Iman.

“I look forward to doing mall visits and talking to girls about girly stuff,” she said, adding that they were still shooting episodes for Zabalaza’s first season. It airs on DStv’s Mzantsi Magic from Mondays to Thursday at 9pm. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
