Xhosa musician Sunda has returned from the UK with a brand new EP titled Umlonjikazi and an invitation to perform at the Glastonbury Contemporary Arts Festival in June.

Sunda, whose real name is Sisanda Myataza, last year established an online campaign to raise funds to get to the UK.

“I really wanted to go to the UK because I felt it would be a culturally enriching experience. I wanted to go to a place that was vastly different from home because I knew it would inspire me to write and think differently about music,” said the musician, who is originally from Mthatha.

On arrival in the UK she met up with Mankala, a band on the lookout for a singer.

“I ended up touring with them for five months and got to see places all over the UK.

“I performed in Wales, Cornwall, London and Bristol,” she said.

“I will be performing with a band called World Government,” said Sunda, regarding her Glastonbury gig.

The singer said her first offering was a mix of covers and originals.

“On the album I have recorded the first-known version of Autumn Leaves in Xhosa,” she said.

“I fuse elements of traditional jazz and African music, as well as Xhosa soul.”
