Mavee lifts off with local helping hand

While many musicians hope to be signed by major record labels, Mdantsane kwaito artist Mavee is distributing his first album through a local production company.

Mavee, real name Vuyani Mancoko, started singing in 1997, but things started looking up for him when he joined the local company, SNH, in 2012. In 2013 he released his first single, Faith. Late last year he released Spopile, the title track of his first album, Introspection.

“Since joining SNH, things have been working well for me. The name Spopile means ‘we have achieved something and we are working’.

“I’ve won a couple of local awards and I’ve featured at the BCM carnival; that, to me, means a lot.”

Mancoko said he was happy with the work put into his album by SNH. His video for Spopile made its debut last week on Tshwane TV.

Producer Luyanda Takwe said they would work towards getting the video shown on larger TV channels. Mancoko’s music had been played on radio stations such as Bush Radio, TruFM, Mdantsane FM and Kumkani FM.

“The support from the people is amazing; we could not have achieved anything without their support,” Mancoko said. His album would be available on iTunes and those wanting to get hard copies could order them via the SNH Productions Facebook page.

“As an independent label, we do everything ourselves. I like the freedom that I have as an artist.”

Mancoko said he hoped people would be inspired by his album, a “fusion of gospel, rap and kwaito. There are happy songs, uplifting songs and just dance music”.

“This album is about examining one’s mind, because life can be hard but we need to keep pushing”.

Takwe said artists should not wait for funding but keep on pursuing what they love. “People will only buy into your business when they see the work that you are doing. For now, we are doing this because we love art, and anything else that follows will be a bonus.” — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
