MBSA elated at record figures

The East London produced Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of the top performing brands that have placed Mercedes-Benz South Africa as a leader in the luxury brand sales.

Last year the company saw its sales rise by over 25%, after it introduced new models into various luxury segments, including the new C-Class.

The Department of Trade and Industry reported MBSA’s figures for 2014 at 28370 units, a growth of 25.3% over 2013 sales.

Mercedes-Benz Cars South Africa (MBCSA) executive director Florian Seidler said the “record” sales numbers have positioned Mercedes-Benz as South Africa’s leading brand in the premium luxury segment.

“New models introduced in the latter part of 2013 and during 2014 have proven to be extremely popular with customers and this success is particularly evident in the sales volumes of our compact cars, the new C-Class and the S-Class,” said Seidler.

Models in the compact car segment include the A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA. “Sales of these models have grown by over 80% during 2014. These models continue to attract new and trendy customers to the brand,” said Seidler.

Media specialist of Mercedes-Benz Car South Africa Shirle Greig declined to give figures for specific models.

The new C-Class was introduced into the South African market in May 2014 at a glittering event in East London.

“The new C-Class has continued its domination of this competitive segment. Our award-winning plant in East London has been ramping up for increased local and export production and the success of this process is testimony to the dedication and skills levels of our employees,” said Seidler.

lOne of Mercedes-Benz’s main competitors, Audi, said its own strong worldwide growth in 2014 was complemented by an “impressive” performance in the South African market. Audi credited the introduction of “key products” such as the Audi A3 sedan and A3 cabriolet for its 21% market share growth.

The Audi A4 remains the company’s best-selling range, with 5 241 units delivered to customers in 2014. The Audi A4 range, consisting of the sedan, avant and allroad, continues to provide excellent customer value in the B-segment of the premium market.

“Despite challenging market conditions in 2014, the Audi brand continues to develop well in South Africa,” said head of Audi South Africa Paul Sansom.

“Audi’s rapid emergence in the premium sector over recent years is set to continue to grow in 2015. We will continue to invest in world-class facilities and in people who provide the very best experience to our customers.”
