Bulelwa Ndudula, who is accused of killing her husband, has enlisted the services of a top East London advocate to represent her in her murder trial.
The 43-year-old primary school teacher stands accused of shooting dead her husband Sakhekile Ndudula in their Cambridge home last September.
Sakhekile Ndudula, the chief of staff in the office of Eastern Cape social development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi, was shot seven times.
Bulelwa Ndudula appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday wearing a stylish oxblood red skirt and matching top, a short black cardigan and matching black high heels.
Advocate Mike Maseti appeared for her yesterday when a suitable high court date for the trial was supposed to have been announced.
However, state prosecutor Kurt Swarts told presiding magistrate Rochelle Sam that the office of the director of public prosecutions in Grahamstown was still studying the docket.
As a result no high court date was set.
Maseti chipped in and stressed that his client’s bail condition that she reports to the Cambridge police station every day be relaxed so he could help prepare for her defence.
Sam however said she could not interfere as the conditions had been set by the Grahamstown High Court.
“The bail condition that she reports to the police station from Sunday to Sunday all her life scupper the opportunity to meet with my client.
“Bail has a character of its own and if the case is brought back to the district court you your worship can adjust it in the interest of justice,” Maseti said, adding that his client should report to the police once a week, preferably on a Sunday.
Sam responded: “I cannot interfere. I don’t have anything in front of me to say on what basis these conditions were made. I am going to leave the conditions as is,” the magistrate said.
She then postponed the case to May 8 for a high court date.
The case was attended by the family members of the accused and those of her late husband.
Police suggested at her bail hearing that jealousy had been the motive.
The court also heard there had been contradictory statements given by Ndudula on the morning of the murder.
Primary gun residue was found on her right hand and evidence such as clothing and the crime scene had been manipulated.
It emerged yesterday Ndudula was back in class teaching at the RH Godlo Primary School in Mdantsane’s NU5.
Eastern Cape department of education spokesman Mali Mtima said, “As the department we have allowed her to go back to work because according to the laws of this country we must allow the court process to come to its logical conclusion as that happens then we will charge her based on that.” — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
