Moment of truth for Tornado in play-offs

Mdantsane football club Tornado begin their quest for NFD promotion this afternoon when they lock horns with Steenberg United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Mangaung.

The week-long national promotion play-offs officially start today and Tornado’s fate should be decided by Wednesday night after three of their four round-robin matches.

But how they start will be paramount as a positive starts inspires confidence going forward while a negative one may dampen their spirits.

On paper, Tornado should have the upper hand over United although both sides lost only four times during their respective campaign that saw them finish top and qualified for the national event.

The Mdantsane side won 22 matches while the Western Cape side won 20 and played to two more draws compared to Tornado.

However, all these stats will mean less or nothing at all in this tournament which is a completely different ball game.

After today’s confrontation with United, Mpumalanga’s Apollo 11 will be Tornado’s target as they meet tomorrow at 12.30pm at the same venue.

This is a match the Eastern Cape side should win since there are doubts about how well prepared their foes are for this competition.

Apollo were only confirmed as Mpumalanga champions recently having been in a dispute with Acornbush United over who was the legitimate provincial winner.

Tornado’s campaign will on Wednesday move to Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo where they will take on Orbit College of North West, a match they are expected to win given the documented weakness of North West sides in this competition.

Winning these first three matches will be paramount for “Inkanyama” as Tornado are also known because the real test will be in the final round-robin encounter against KZN’s Kings United on Friday. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
