Nehawu branch given new lease on life

A Nehawu branch at the cooperative governance and traditional affairs department (Cogta) headquarters in Bhisho, which was disbanded last year after it accused the union’s regional bosses of taking kickbacks from departmental authorities, has been given a lifeline.

This as the union’s provincial leadership last week overturned the Max Madlingozi regional leadership’s decision to disband the outspoken Cogta branch.

The branch has been one of those in the Max Madlingozi region that took a dissenting view from their provincial and national leadership, and were vocal in their stance against the removal of Numsa and Zwelinzima Vavi from Cosatu.

The outspoken branch was disbanded last November after it also accused their regional leadership of taking kickbacks from departmental bosses, a move at the time said to have further strained relations between the two Nehawu structures.

Nehawu provincial chairman Maki Clay yesterday confirmed that the province has overturned the region’s decision to dissolve the branch leadership and replace it with an interim structure.

This after being instructed by their national office to deal with the matter.

“At this moment we are not at liberty to share what has led to the reversal of that decision. We are not saying the region was wrong when they took it, but all we are saying is that after we had applied our minds as the province, we agreed on reversing it,” Clay said.

The interim branch leadership will have to be disbanded and the previously leadership, led by chairman Lennox Maho, reinstated.

“As we are currently busy with consultation now, I am sure that after the Easter weekend, that decision will be fully effected,” said Clay.

The region’s secretary Siyabonga Kobese could not be reached at the time of writing yesterday.

Maho yesterday welcomed the move, saying he was glad “the unlawful and unconstitutional decision” was overturned.

However, he raised concerns about the delays in effecting the decision.

Days after being disbanded last November, branch members alleged that their regional leadership did not support them, “but sided with management” on various issues. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
