New EL mall going eco-friendly

AMALINDA in East London is set to buzz with new developments under construction. Residents are in store for a whole new shopping experience on Main Road once the “all green” Amalinda Square is completed.

It will feature a shopping centre with a SuperSpar as the anchor tenant and a host of well- known food franchises.

Amalinda Spar owner Harry Natha said green principles were used extensively in the building’s design, effectively making the shopping centre one of the most eco-friendly buildings in the city.

In keeping with the theme, project developers merged light technology developed in the USA to allow for natural light throughout the day , a low energy refrigeration system as well as harvesting rainwater using a retention pond.

All of this, Natha said, was set to be completed before the start of the festive season.

“This is going to be one of the most eco-friendly buildings in East London,” Natha enthused.

“All natural light will be used during the day thanks to a unique system of prismatic diffused skylights made in America. But when artificial light is needed, the latest LED systems will be used extensively.

“Regular users of Amalinda Main Road will also be pleased to note the developers have dedicated themselves to pedestrian safety and have committed to improve traffic flow by constructing two traffic circles and a centre island.”

Natha said several popular stores had already come on board, including Clicks, McDonalds and Debonairs.

A total of 365 parking bays are planned.

“The existing Spar will be converted into a Build-It store, a DIY store which is part of the Spar group,” Natha said.

The centre is under construction on Amalinda Main Road, at a site opposite the Shoprite shopping centre. —
