Farmer held after ‘shooting at cops’

A STUTTERHEIM farmer was arrested on Wednesday evening by police on charges of attempted murder after allegedly shooting at officers with a shotgun.

The arrest of farmer Ian Bester of Endwell Farm comes after police wanted to investigate a report he had stolen cattle on his farm.

Officers visited the farm with complainant Tyalboyi Qebe and his wife Nobandile Qebe, who on arrival identified what they claimed were their cattle.

“The workers on our farm reported four cattle had gone missing.

“These cattle are clearly marked as ours, but the owner of Endwell Farm claimed them as his,” Qebe said, adding the combined value of the cattle was R38800.

It is alleged that when police asked Bester about the cattle he became defensive.

“When the police wanted to speak to Bester, he chased them away and later went inside his house to get his firearm,” said police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa .

It is alleged Bester then fired his shotgun in the direction of the policemen but missed.

“The police opened a case of attempted murder at Stutterheim SAPS ,” said Mawisa.

Bester appeared in the Stutterheim Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

He was released on R1000 bail and the matter was postponed to March 20. —
