Awareness campaign tackles health issues

HUNDREDS of locals gathered at the East Bank support centre at the weekend for health awareness programmes to educate the community about tuberculosis and HIV/Aids.

The event was part of Global Youth Week, which aims to provide a constructive response to social fragmentation and communal needs.

Local doctors were on hand to conduct blood pressure tests and personal evaluations of sickly patients unable to go to a clinic or hospital because of their health.

Dr Chuma Nombekela of Frere Hospital conducted a home medical evaluation for Noyase Solani, 81, who has been bedridden for four months.

“The patient has been deprived of oxygen in her brain and blood, inhibiting any movements.

“In cases like this, where the family cannot afford hospitalisation, I encourage them to be proactive in providing a comfortable life for the sick relative,” said Nombekela.

The community was given a platform to voice matters of concern over healthcare and child protection to a panel headed by Feroza Cassels, a child protection social worker.

Cassels identified substance abuse and child neglect as the main issues facing the East Bank community.

“Our plan is to keep this initiative going. We have started with East Bank and hope to branch out to other areas .” —
