Jilted man goes beserk with knife

TWO Transkei families are in shock as a young woman lies dead, her grandmother fights for life in hospital and a third woman is missing.

A knife-wielding jilted boyfriend allegedly went berserk at the weekend, stabbing to death Nomandithi Goniwe, 25, stabbing her grandmother Nogaweni Velebhayi, 85, and abducting a third woman.

He is still on the run with her.

The man was apparently enraged after Goniwe ended their relationship.

A massive search is under way as villagers turn out in numbers to help police in the Kwaaiman area near Mqanduli.

No details of the kidnapped woman were available yesterday.

Mqanduli police spokesman Major Zamukulungisa Jozana said the man had allegedly broken down a door and stabbed 85-year- old Velebhayi.

He then chased his former girlfriend to a neighbour’s house where he stabbed her to death.

Jozana said the man then abducted another woman at the neighbour’s home and disappeared.

The incident happened at Ngcwanguba location in Kwaaiman on Saturday night.

The man, who is known to the community, has so far managed to evade the search by police and villagers.

Family member Nofikile Velebhayi said the man had been abusive to Goniwe, who is her niece, and had refused to accept that he had been dumped.

“This was not the first time he had gone to the house.

“I have been told he would go there and stand next to the kraal, then go around the yard.

“Then on other days he would just be standing behind the house,” she said.

Before the man went to the Velebhayi home he had sent a bizarre text message to Goniwe, she added.

Nofikile said between 7pm and 8pm the man allegedly started knocking at the door and calling Goniwe.

“She didn’t want to come out so he kicked the door down and then stabbed grandma twice, but Nomandithi managed to run to the neighbour’s house.

“He followed her there and that’s when she was killed,” she said.

Nofikile said the elderly woman had been a mother to Goniwe, who was left by her biological mother at an early age.

“She is the one who raised her. This is really painful for us,” she said. —
