Woman gives birth in street

JUST two months after a similar incident, the Pefferville community is in an uproar after another woman had to give birth in the street.

Duncan Village resident Nambitha Dyantyi , 40, was lucky to hold her healthy, albeit premature, daughter yesterday afternoon, after delivering her in the street in Pefferville.

Two months ago Pamella Hendriks also gave birth in the street. Her baby boy died after the Pefferville clinic refused to offer assistance.

Community member Elizabeth Vervloed said Dyantyi had been at the bottle store yesterday afternoon to buy three “empties”.

“When she left the store, it did not look as if she was in pain, so I went outside to check on her and found her on her knees,” said Vervloed.

“She told me she could feel the baby coming out and I asked her to take her pants off – but by then the baby was already born.”

Vervloed said the nurse at the Pefferville clinic had refused to help and told them to call an ambulance or find a vehicle to drive Dyantyi to hospital.

Haven Wellness Centre employee Cedric Stowman said he heard the commotion and rushed home to get a blanket for Dyantyi before alerting the senior professional nurse from The Haven, Lynette Moonsamy.

“I quickly removed the baby, who was stuck, and the afterbirth, and wrapped the baby up, and sent her to Dr Fray’s surgery to be checked out. I then helped the mother and massaged her to avoid excessive bleeding,” said Moonsamy.

When the Daily Dispatch arrived at Dr Gary Fray’s surgery the baby had been checked and was safely wrapped up and in the arms of a relieved mother.

The Pefferville clinic referred the Daily Dispatch to the province for comment.

Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said before any measures could be taken they would have to investigate the incident.

“I would advise the complainant to call our 24-hour toll free number on 0800032364 to make a formal complaint.” —
