BCM has more black middle class than Bay

NELSON Mandela Metro (NMM) has 510382 compared with 306408 residents who earn nothing in Buffalo City Metro (BCM) and there are hundreds more black middle class earners in BCM than in the Bay.

These were two findings of the StatsSA place names and sub-place names data sets which cover municipal districts and municipalities down to ward level.

The data for the so-called “lower geographic” areas of South Africa was released yesterday at the “worst area of South Africa” – Silver Town in KwaZakhele, NMM, by SA’s Statistician-General, Pali Lehohla.

Most (96%) of Silver Town’s 1776 residents used bucket toilets and 81% of 508 homes used paraffin and had no electricity, Lehohla told the media and public.

But, he said: “Census is power!” and now all government members knew precisely what had to be done in Silver Town.

With help from StatsSA information officer Nompo Sigwela, the Daily Dispatch was able to build a cross-tabulation or fusion table to sample freshly-released but thick layers of data.

However, Sigwela said the public would need training to access data which comes with testy software.

At the top end of the wealth pyramid, the Eastern Cape-styled super-rich – those earning more than R204801 a month – were concentrated in the two metros, but with very different race profiles.

Although the Port Elizabeth-Uitenhage-based metro had 866 super-wealthy individuals compared with East London-King William’s Town-Bhisho’s 612 rich, BCM’s ration of 353 rich blacks and 195 rich whites was more balanced than NMM’s 486 rich whites and 242 rich blacks.

Nelson Mandela Bay had 106 rich mixed race people compared with 41 in BCM while each metro had 20 rich Indian or Asian residents.

Mthatha is where black and white rich are almost equal in number, with 109 rich whites and 102 rich blacks and only one rich person of mixed race.

Port St Johns has 22 rich black people, three rich mixed race people and no super-rich whites.

Emerging to middle class people earning R6401 to R12800 a month, revealed that BCM’s black middle class of 18775 people was 3002 more than Nelson Mandela Bay’s 15773 black middle income generators, but the Bay’s mixed race middle class of 10986 people outstripped BCM’s 2470 while Port Elizabeth-Uitenhage’s 22135 white middle class earners was almost treble BCM’s 8430.

In total, Nelson Mandela’s middle class is 50499 strong, with 30440 emerging to middle class people working in BCM, 1134 in Port St Johns, 760 in Port Alfred and 381 in Joe Slovo rural area. —
