Police ask victims to collect their stolen items

CAMBRIDGE police have appealed to theft victims to come forward and identify recovered stolen electrical goods, including eight plasma televisions.

The items were stolen during house break-ins in Cambridge, Amalinda, Vincent and surrounding areas , and goods that remain unclaimed will be auctioned off.

The TVs, laptops and sound systems valued at R300000 have been gathering dust at the police station’s evidence centre since January.

A Cambridge police task team has arrested 60 suspects in connection with these cases.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said some of the electrical appliances had already been handed back to owners but a large number were still unclaimed.

“What we are saying is that we are going to auction off these items once the cases are finalised in court,” Marais said.

He said members of the public whose plasma screens were stolen should visit the Cambridge police station and reclaim them for free.

“We don’t charge people money. All we need is supporting documentation that will confirm that the item truly belongs to the person who is claiming it,” he explained.

Marais said it was hard for police to link the stolen items with individual burglaries because suspects were not truthful about where the crimes had taken place as this would implicate them.

The police spokesman said police were also in possession of six stolen cars to the value of R250000 which had been recovered.

“The task team is working round the clock and are having sleepless nights in the fight against crime in this area,” he said.

He advised residents to report “suspicious vehicles” to police.

“When they are reporting these they must provide police with the registration numbers of the vehicles because we are having challenges with members of the public who are only providing a colour of the vehicle when reporting incidents,” said Marais. —
