Man who toppled gambling boss broke

THE whistle blower who caused the fall of the Eastern Cape’s gambling authority is now without an income after he was forced to quit his job.

Meanwhile, disgraced Eastern Cape Gambling & Betting Board chairman Sipho Majombozi has landed another plum position in the gaming industry.

Clinton Redman, a former licens ing official at the betting board, battled authorities for more than five years over the appointment of the board’s CEO, which he believed was invalid.

He was threatened with a disciplinary hearing in 2010, accused of leaking information to the Daily Dispatch, and forced to resign.

To escape the hearing he accepted a retirement package on condition that he withdraw all charges against the board, Majombozi and recently appointed CEO Mabutho Zwane.

On April 29 the board’s attorney Lavery Modise wrote to Redman’s attorney to press for proof that Redman had withdrawn the charges before his retirement package would be settled .

But public protector Thuli Madonsela ignored Modise’s insistence that charges be withdrawn.

Economics affairs MEC Mcebisi Jonas, who had reappointed Majombozi , also took action. Following a forensic report, Jonas pressurised the board, including Majombozi, to resign or face dismissal. He kept Zwane on.

A week ago Madonsela ruled that: “The chairperson’s (Majombozi) conduct was, accordingly, improper and constitutes maladministration.”

She also condoned Redman’s crusade against Zwane’s “improper” appointment.

Redman went public this week, saying that Madonsela had confirmed everything he had said. He is considering laying criminal charges. “ Zwane, whose appointment is described as ‘improper’, earns over a million per annum. Majombozi, who is fingered as the main culprit ... is now sitting in another cushy gambling position in Gauteng,” Redman said.

Majombozi was recently appointed to the Gauteng gambling board by the province’s MEC for economic development, Nkosiphendule Kolisile.

Kolisile said Majombozi’ s appointment had been made before Madonsela’s report was published.
