Chris Hani region dumps Mabuyane

IN AN unprecedented move the Chris Hani region has ditched one of its sons, ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane, in his attempt to retain his position at the party’s elective conference in Port Elizabeth next month.

The region announced its preferred candidates for leadership and Mabuyane did not make the list, but instead MPL Michael Peter was nominated as secretary. C hairman Phumulo Masualle was nominated to retain his position.

The two deputy positions and treasurer position have yet to be discussed.

According to Daily Dispatch sources the only person who was adamant about Mabuyane’s return as secretary was regional chairman Mxolisi Koyo and out of eight sub-regions in the district, only one nominated Mabuyane.

The source said Koyo wanted the status quo to remain but was overruled by the majority of the regional leadership who wanted Mabuyane out.

Attempts to get comment from the regional secretary Noncedo Zonke were unsuccessful as her phone was off.

Koyo referred all queries to Zonke and the deputy secretary Lamla Jiyose said he was in a meeting.

The provincial ANC Youth League also nominated Masualle for a second term as chairman, with OR Tambo District Municipality mayor Dingaan Myolwa as his deputy, youth league provincial chairman Ayanda Matiti as secretary, and Peter as his deputy.

The position for treasurer has not been decided but the names of social development MEC Pemmy Majodina and current treasurer Thandiswa Marawu came up .

Eastern Cape ANCYL secretary Mziwonke Ndabeni said the league analysed the current leadership before making a recommendation.

“The provincial conference was discussed within the context that branch general meetings are starting where branches will nominate their preferred leaders.

“A s the youth league we are regarded as a region of the ANC. Therefore we made an assessment of the politics of the province and we were of the opinion that the current chair of the province should be retained,” Ndabeni said.

The position of the deputy chairman is vacant as Gugile Nkwinti has decided to vacate it, therefore the name of the OR Tambo mayor Myolwa was proposed.

“W e were of the view that there is a need for change in office – we need a person who has energy and stamina,” he said. “We’ re of the view that if you had a vibrant office we would not have the weaknesses that you see in government today.

“ We need a person that is decisive and therefore the youth league proposed the name of comrade Matiti,” said Ndabeni.

He confirmed that the youth league proposed Peter to replace human settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August as deputy secretary.

He said the league would approach other ANC structures to discuss the position of treasurer.

Although there were claims the youth league’s meeting did not meet its quorum requirements, Ndabeni disputed the claims saying they had records of everyone who was in the meeting and those who were absent had sent apologies. —
