Lobby group to back Mabuyane

A GROUP calling themselves “progressive collective” has been formed to lobby for the retention of the ANC’s present provincial party leadership.

The group has been circulating a document to members supporting the existing provincial executive committee.

All party lobby groups in the provinces have provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle down to retain as chairman but all vary when it comes to the other four positions.

The “progressive collective” consists of leaders from OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi and Amathole and some provincial leaders.

Other party leaders in Amathole and OR Tambo want TenTen Pikini and Michael Peter to fill the positions of secretary and deputy secretary respectively.

The “progressive collective” want current provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane and his deputy Helen Sauls- August to retain their positions.

A report circulated by the “progressive collective” says that others contesting the positions have “no direction (with) various names in each position except that of the chair.

“This will delay them from having a consolidated plan as branch general meetings (BGM) started (on Thursday).

“The reality about them is that each of their proposed list has personal interests … This will lead them to collide and they might suffer losses ahead of the conference.

“We are approaching them to agree on our position and we are confident they will do so.”

The document further states that the other lobby group have two regions, the Sarah Baartman and Chris Hani, supporting their cause.

“Lets qualify this by saying: majority of these RECs (regional executive committees) appear to be on their side but sub-regions and branches are with us and they will pronounce on their preferences soon as BGMs kick off.”

The report further states that the OR Tambo regional leadership was divided on who they will support.

The OR Tambo region is the biggest in the Eastern Cape and second biggest in the country.

Ahead of the regional conference last year the majority of the members were part of the pro-change lobby and support the current regional leadership.

However things changed early this year and the region is the most fragmented ahead of the provincial conference with some leaders who accused Mabuyane of killing their branches now singing his praises.

The group also took a swipe at the provincial ANC youth league saying they will go to the conference fragmented.

“Some of their members are fed up with the current youth league PEC and they will voice their dissatisfaction in the conference,” said the progressive collective. —
