Police raid nets just one small knife

A FORCE of 30 police officers confiscated just a single pocket knife from a Grade 10 pupil yesterday.

The raid on Sophatisana Senior Secondary School in Reeston by Cambridge police officers came a week after the school’s principal wrote to the Cambridge station commander asking for random searches by police at the school, which is situated in the heart of Reeston, where drug activities are said to be rampant.

Principal Thandiwe Tiwani asked for the raids due to the high crime rate “involving drugs, drug trafficking and carrying of dangerous weapons by pupils”.

Police arrived at 9am and by 10.30am about 650 pupils had been searched. A police sniffer dog was used to search for dagga while officers physically opened school bags.

The Grade 10 pupil whose pocket knife was found was given a verbal warning and sent back to class.

But geography and tourism teacher Thandiswa Mxoli welcomed the raid. “Neither learners nor teachers are safe here. We had an incident in February where a pupil smuggled a pepper-spray gun in the classroom.”

She said the pepper spray exploded during a lesson.
