Home of Legends lives up to name

WHAT happens when you bring Ringo Madlingozi, Zahara, Siphokazi, Stimela and Zakes Bantwini together under one roof? An explosion of great music.

This was the case in Mthatha over the weekend, when these talented musicians entertained hundreds of revellers at the 2010 World Cup stadium during the town’s first ever Home of Legends Jazz Festival.

By this time, temperatures were so low that some band members even took blankets to cover themselves.

At 3am, Phumlani-born, double-platinum singer Zahara wowed the crowd when she came on stage.

It was obvious that Zahara’s act was the much-awaited performance of the evening. Most members of the crowd stood up and sang along, waving, while others rushed towards the stage. Thanks to the swift action of marshals, a gate was closed before the crowd could invade the stage periphery.

Zahara did what she does best – perform and uplift everyone’s spirits.

Her set lasted about an hour and then Bantwini took over.

This was by far one of the best music shows to have been hosted in Mthatha. Hopefully it won’t be the last. — abongilem@dispatch.com
