THE career of East London DJ Mobi Dixon is about to reach new heights now he’s signed a deal with nationally renowned music company Soul Candi.
The company has some of the country’s hottest DJs and producers in its stable, among them Lulo Cafe, DJ Mbuso, Crazy White Boy and RJ Benjamin.
The 28-year-old DJ Mobi – whose real name is Mabi Ntuli – made a name for himself when chosen as one of the up-and-coming musicians to benefit from popular DJ Oskido’s I Believe initiative.
The aim of the initiative was to empower youth with music, life and business skills as well as a financial boost to help them kickstart their own businesses.
Soul Candi head of artists and repertoire (A&R) Bongani Madikizela said they signed DJ Mobi two months ago. His extended play (EP) was released late last month.
Madikizela, who is responsible for recruiting talent for Soul Candi, said a friend had introduced him to DJ Mobi’s music.
“After hearing his music, we were in constant contact with him. We would talk about the music industry and he would call us whenever,” he said.
Madikizela said they decided to sign Ntuli because they believed in his talent and style of music.
Madikizela said Ntuli had a digital contract with Soul Candi, which means they are releasing his music on digital platforms.
He said they have released his EP with his headlining single LoveColourSpin, featuring well-known vocalist Asanda Lusaseni. It is available on iTunes, Traxsource, Juno and Beatport.
“Before signing up with us, Mobi worked with one of our artists, Giggs Superstar.”
He said the songs they released last month were focused on the festive season.
“We will release his second project next year. We are still trying to finalise a couple of things and next year we might release a CD instead of digital,” Madikizela said.
DJ Mobi said he was humbled by the Soul Candi deal to help get his music distributed all over the country.
“I have found my new home now and I’m looking forward to working with them in the future,” he said.
He said the songs Soul Candi released were a build-up to his album, which is due for release next year.
Last year DJ Mobi was one of 20 Eastern Cape DJs and producers who benefited from the I Believe initiative, run in conjunction with the National Youth Development Agency’s Ithubalentsha micro-enterprise programme.
A total of 180 young people participated.
With I Believe, each participant was equipped with the necessary skills and resources to establish and sustain income-generating businesses.
DJ Mobi said the initiative has since helped him to run his own East London-based recording label – Dance is Kulcha Records – which he started in 2008.
Last week DJ Mobi shot a music video for his single, LoveColourSpin, in East London. He said the video would be playlisted on all music TV channels. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
