Emmy nomination for EL man

Director says SA TV up there with the best.

EASTERN Cape’s multi-talented television producer and director Donald Clarke has been nominated for the 41st International Emmy Awards.

The East Londoner who is now based in Johannesburg, was nominated for his remarkable production and directing work on season one of Master Chef SA .

The awards take place on November 25.

The former Selborne pupil and Rhodes University graduate said he couldn’t wait to represent the country in the Non-Scripted Entertainment category.

The popular cooking show was produced under Clarke’s production company Lucky Bean Productions.

Clarke said: “We were over the moon when we heard the news. As the executive producer and series director of the show to just get the nomination was an achievement for us. There are many incredible TV shows out there and what I’m really proud of is that a South African production will be represented there.”

Last year TV producers from all over the world were called on to submit their creative work.

Clarke will be flying the South African flag high alongside comedian Loyiso Gola, who was nominated in the comedy category for Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, which airs on etv.

“It’s an acknowledgement of the expertise not only that of our show, but a lot of other South African shows. We are starting to produce TV at a consistently high level that can compete with other shows around the world. I think it’s more of a symbolic moment where SA TV is now world class. It would be great to win,” Clarke said.

Clarke is in competition with Australia’s Go Back to Where You Came From , Israel’s Dear Neighbours Help Our Daughter Find Love and Colombia’s Reto al Chef 2.

“I think we got the nomination because there was a high production value, the camera work, editing and story telling was of high standard and we were still able to make it South African. Many people could relate to the story,” he said.

Gola on the other hand is competing against the United Kingdom’s Moone Boy, France’s Working Girls and Brazil’s How to Enjoy the End of the World.

Clarke said although he had always known he enjoyed entertaining people, he never imagined he would become an international producer.

The 36-year-old father of two kickstarted his production career with kiddies’ programmes such as YoTV and KTV . Included among his production achievements are Top Billing, So You Think You Can Dance, Fear Factor India, Big Brother Nigeria and Survivor South Africa.

He has also won a South African Film and Television Award for producing the MTV Africa Music Awards .

Clarke said he was working with partners Chris Green and popular radio DJ Unathi Msengana writing their own formats and would be selling them to the rest of the world. —
