Special screening of ‘Long Walk to Freedom’

Nelson Mandela movie to show in town.

THE Eastern Cape will get a chance to see the new Nelson Mandela film this week when a special screening takes place at Hemingways Mall tomorrow.

The movie, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, premiered early this month in Johannesburg.

Members of the cast including British actors Idris Elba, who plays Madiba, and Naomie Harris, who plays Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, were present at that screening.

“Members of the cast, mainly those from the Eastern Cape, are going to be there . There will be key actors from Johannesburg as well,” said poet Zolani Mkiva, who has been working with Video Vision to bring the movie to the Eastern Cape.

He said the Mandela family based in the Eastern Cape was also expected to attend the event.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Mkiva said they had initially planned for it to be held in Mthatha.

“We could not have one in Mthatha however because there is no facility there.”

The Eastern Cape crew includes 10-year-old Siza Pini, who plays a young Mandela, Unako Poswayo, who plays a young Justice Mtirara, Simnikiwe Msutwana as an older Mtirara, Phumzile Nokwe, who acted as a traditional surgeon and Sambona Masebeni as a praise singer.

The Johannesburg actors coming down for the event are said to include Tony Kgoroge who plays Walter Sisulu and Athandwa Kani who plays a teenage Mandela.

Mkiva said he acted as a cultural adviser during the making of the movie.

“It gives a very good account of what went through. It’s a well-balanced summation of the Long Walk to Freedom,” Mkiva said, referring to the 1995 autobiography.

“It’s a touching film, it makes one see why we have to celebrate our freedom,” he said.
