Crime-busters hailed for heroics

Safety and liaison chairman criticises grade three R3 000-R5 000 salaries.

THE Eastern Cape’s top cops were recognised for their heroics and commitment to the service at the 16th annual provincial excellence awards, which were held at Hemingways Hotel on Wednesday night.

Crime statistics had shown contact crimes were reduced by 27.7% in the province in the past year, she said.

Butterworth police Captain Mampondo Mbangi was crowned winner of the highly contested Star of the Year award and walked away with a R10 000 cash prize.

Duncan Village police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais was announced as the police Communicator of the Year, triumphing over Butterworth police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha and Mdantsane police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku.

The Detective of the Year award went to Mdantsane’s rising young star, detective Constable Lusanda Nkathazo. Uitenhage was crowned best police station and Humansdorp the best police cluster in the province.

Nyusile, a keynote speaker at the event, won the hearts of the audience when he criticised the fact some police officers were still on a level three salary grade, which pays between R3 000 and R5 000 per month.

“If all government departments did away with level three grading why can’t this organisation do the same. I have already raised the issue with our police minister (Nathi Mthethwa) and he has undertaken to review the matter next year,” said Nyusile. He wished the officers well. Petros, whose future is still unclear, offered a message of support to the police: “The job you are doing can never be for money but passion. I served this organisation for 18 years and I enjoyed every single moment,” he said.

“I will in due course announce my next job but I can promise it will be a job where I will still be delivering services to this country.”
