Mandela biopic resonates with preview audience in EL

CINEMAGOERS were taken through a range of emotions on Thursday night at the East London premiere on the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The screening took place at Hemingways and evoked anger, tears and laughter from the audience.

The two-hour screening was attended by cast members from the Eastern Cape, government officials, traditional leaders and specially invited guests.

Well-known actors Tony Kgoroge, who plays Walter Sisulu; Atandwa Kani, who plays the role of Mandela as a teenager; and Terry Pheto, Mandela’s first wife Evelyn, were also present.

The screening was organised by Video Vision, the company responsible for the film. It is based on Nelson Mandela’s biography, Long Walk to Freedom.

The Mandela family was represented by Mandla Mandela’s wife Nodiyala, Zwelithembile Mandela, Mvezo village headman Jongisizwe Dani and the Mvezo Traditional Council.

Dani said the film took him back to where the nation had come from and how the struggle had been handled by the elders. “I am overwhelmed by the movie. I think South Africans will like it and the rest of the world too. They managed to bring the book to life. It was painful watching it, to see my family struggling but I am happy future generations will see this,” Dani said.
