BCM plans to buy farm at Kidds Beach for R16.5m

BUFFALO City Metro council has endorsed a decision to buy land from a Kidds Beach farmer to save more than 200 families who are illegally occupying the land from eviction.

But that is on condition that the land’s R16.5-million price tag is reduced.

Embattled BCM municipal manager Andile Fani tabled an internal report on the state of the farm owned by Moshe Sohaba during a council meeting on Friday. The report outlined the Metro’s plan to purchase the 83.9 hectares but councillors argued that the price was too high.

Speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele ended up making a ruling that the matter be deferred to a later date to allow officials to investigate the matter further and see whether Sohaba would not reduce the price.

Many issues were taken into consideration including the fact that less than half of the land is suitable for human habitation.

The Daily Dispatch first reported on the plight of the Khayelitsha residents near Kidds Beach early this year after Sohaba issued letters to the 200 families in April this year outlining plans to bulldoze all their homes.

The farmer gave an order for the evictions after negotiations with BCM over the relocation of the families deadlocked.

At the meeting Fani recommended that an external valuer be appointed to determine the exact value of the farm. But councillors rejected the idea, suggesting instead that the farm owner be engaged further to lower the price. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
