Barefoot pensioner, 84, flees from farm attack

AN ELDERLY East London man fled his farmhouse, barefoot and bleeding heavily from a head wound, after two men broke into his home and attacked him.

Ivan Angelbeck, 84, of Derosa Farm near Kwelerha, said he had been asleep in his bedroom on Friday night when the incident occurred.

Angelbeck is the father of Democratic Alliance (DA) Gonubie councillor Roy Angelbeck and grandfather of Great Kei Municipality DA councillor Sharne Jacobs.

East London police said yesterday they were investigating a case of housebreaking and theft in relation to the incident.

A charge of assault may also be laid once suspects have been arrested.

Police spokesman LieutenantColonel Mtati Tana said no suspects had yet been apprehended although sniffer dogs were brought to the scene to search for clues.

However, police were following up on strong leads, he added.

Tana said Angelbeck reported that the thieves stole a DVD player, cellphone and groceries from his fridge.

Angelbeck said the men gained entry through a spare room window.

“I had fallen asleep with the TV on and when they disconnected the DVD player the TV made a noise and I woke up.”

He walked into his living room and saw two men, one tall and one short.

He screamed at them to get out, but they

“The short guy was carrying a panga, which he used to knock me on my head.

“When I collapsed to the floor he continued to assault me.

“I can’t remember how long I was unconscious but eventually I came to and fled, leaving them behind,” he said, adding that he had run about 300m to Roy’s house to call for help. —
