Campaign to fight abuse

16 Days of Activism launch in Lusikisiki hotspot.

A CAMPAIGN to fight the scourge of violence against women and children was launched in Lusikisiki yesterday after President Jacob Zuma declared the area a hotspot for such crimes.

The Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, said the area was chosen for the provincial launch of 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children because of the prevalence of such crimes there.

The minister said she was shocked by reports in September that three women from the same family – aged 74, 54 and 27 – were hacked to death after being accused of witchcraft.

The killings happened in broad daylight in Luqhoqhweni village.

“We are concerned because so many women are killed and little children as well,” said Xingwana.

The minister said Zuma had sent the government delegation to see what intervention was needed to curb the high rate of rapes and murders affecting elderly women and children in the O R Tambo district municipality.

Speaking at the launch at Mgwezo administrative area yesterday, the minister said previously women fell victim to rapists, kidnappers, murderers and abuse through the cultural practice of ukuthwala (forced marriages).

Xingwana said the 16 Days campaign was effective in raising awareness on gender-based violence.
