GOSPEL fanatics around Mthatha are in for a treat later this month when the city plays host to a festival with Benjamin Dube, Nobathembu Mabeka and SABC Crown Gospel award-winner Dumi Mkokstad in the line-up.
Organiser Milile Daweti said they had decided to host the Gospel Explosion Festival in the city because of a lack of big gospel events in the area.
“Most shows take place in East London and Port Elizabeth, Mthatha is almost a forgotten place,” he said.
He said the December 22 event is aimed at delivering a spiritual awakening and entertainment to the King Sabata Dalindyebo area.
He said they had partnered with various church leaders in the area to ensure the event’s success.
“We have pastors selling tickets in their churches,” he said.
“This time of the year is hard for many people, some aren’t happy with how things turned out but, through this event, we want them to know that God is still in charge,” he said.
Daweti said they would also be using the event to celebrate Mkokstad’s award.
“He is an Eastern Cape son and we are proud of him. We also have four artists from the Mthatha area who will be performing,” he said, adding that they would share the stage with artists like Dube.
“This is a career boost for them and will help them develop,” he said.
Daweti said the artists would perform a mixture of praise and worship.
“Nobathembu is good on the praise side while Pastor Benjamin Dube is a worshipper, people will get to experience their music,” he said.
Mkokstad, whose real name is Mdumiseni Nzimane, said people who attended the show should expect to worship God, along with other believers.
Nzimande said he would also organise to have with him the Crown award he recently won for his song, Mbize.
“I want to thank my followers for their support,” he said.
Mkokstad said he would be performing some songs with Betusile Mcinga, the son of Transkei gospel sensation, Lusanda Mcinga.
“I am excited we will be part of this event,” he said.
Daweti said they were planning on having similar events in East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
“We will have the same line-up travelling along the coast next year,” he said.
This year’s event will be held at the Assemblies of God Convention Centre in Mthatha. Tickets, at R130, are available through Computicket. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
