Five die on EC roads

Five people died on Eastern Cape roads this weekend. Provincial Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea said three people died on Sunday afternoon when an Avanza transporting six people lost control.

The accident happened on the N2 between East London and Butterworth. The vehicle landed on its roof, killing three female passengers and seriously injuring two other passengers. A sixth passenger sustained slight injuries, Machaea said.

On Saturday, two people were killed instantly when a driver lost control of a bakkie while travelling on the R63 to Komga. Machaea said three passengers were seriously injured.

In the Buffalo City Metro, law enforcement officers arrested over 60 people as part of a festive clampdown.

East London police spokesman Lieutenant Mtati Tana said 63 people were arrested - 18 of which were charged with drunk driving.

The remaining 45 suspects were arrested in the East London CBD for various charges including possession of drugs or stolen property, assault, and drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Tana further said a 24-year-old man was arrested for stabbing a 30-year-old man to death in Duncan Village. The 24-year-old is due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
