Two cops killed in Eastern Cape accident

A deadly accident on the R63 road between King William’s Town and Stutterheim claimed the lives of two police officers today.

The Warrant Officers from Stutterheim police station died on the scene. King William’s Town police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa said the two were transporting a prisoner to the Stutterheim Magistrate’s Court at 8am when the vehicle the police truck they were travelling in collided head on with another truck just after 8am.

Mawisa said the prisoner sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard. She said two other vehicles, a Toyota Yaris and a bakkie, were also involved in the accident but the drivers were not injured.

Eastern Cape safety and security MEC Helen Sauls-August conveyed her condolences to the deceased members’ families.

She said: “We mourn the great loss of dedicated police officers who were committed to fight crime and making our communities safe. We extend our deepest condolences to their families and colleagues and encourage them not to be discouraged by the passing of their loved ones and colleagues.”

The MEC said the death of the officers should inspire all other SAPS members in the province to double their efforts in the fight against crime. – Zwanga Mukhuthu
