BCM carnival to herald in festive mood for residents

THE festive season is in full swing and East London residents can look forward to a jam-packed diary of fun and entertainment at the weekend.

Starting today, the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) carnival kicks off at the beachfront, while a first-ever beach party is planned for tomorrow at Orient Beach. Rounding off the weekend’s activities, the popular Buyel’ ekhaya Music Festival takes place on Sunday at Buffalo Park.

BCM communications manager Keith Ngesi said carnivals held in other parts of the city had been a roaring success and no incidents were reported.

“The Mdantsane carnival was a huge success, people came out in numbers and we managed to close just after 7pm as we had stated,” he said.

“The King William’s Town carnival which was supposed to take place over two days last weekend was held on Wednesday. Even there we did not have any problems. We closed shortly after 10pm and people were on their best behaviour.”

Project manager for the event, Pumeza Kwababa from the Cino Shearer Foundation, said they were looking forward to hosting East Londoners and bringing some excitement and cheer to the community.

Kwababa said everyone was welcome at the beach party.

“We will have national artists performing while there will also be volleyball and soccer games taking place,” she said.

Kwababa said prizes would be up for grabs for the winners of the beach games. “We have partnered with Spar and Nedbank in this initiative. We have not yet decided what the people will win but it won’t be big prizes.

“We just want them to have fun and enjoy the festive season,” she said.

Kwababa said they would also use the beach party to scout new talent for the foundation. Cino Shearer, the founder of the Cino Shearer Foundation is Ishmael’s publicist.

“There will be auditions for dancers and singers during the event. We might even use some for Ishmael and the singers will get a chance to record a single,” she said.

The foundation will also give out food parcels to disadvantaged people around the metro.

The line-up for the BCM carnival today includes local artists chosen from various auditions held around the city.

The carnival starts at 11am and ends at 7pm.
