Zuma to map out the way ahead for ANC

THE continent’s oldest liberation movement celebrates 102 years of existence on Wednesday.

Next Saturday, ANC president Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the ANC’s traditional annual January 8 Statement where he is expected to outline party achievements and programmes for the coming year.

Zuma will deliver the main address during a rally at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, during which he is expected to reflect on party preparations and programmes in the build-up to this year’s general elections.

Zuma is yet to declare a date for the fifth democratic general elections expected to take place during the first half of the year.

The Eastern Cape provincial January 8 Statement event is expected to be held in Dutywa in the Mbhashe Municipality area two weeks after the national event.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane yesterday said preparations for the provincial event on January 25 were at an advanced stage.

Mabuyane said the province would ferry members to the national event in 12 buses.

Mabuyane said Mbhashe was chosen because the ANC wanted to “camp” in the area ahead of January 29 by-elections.

This follows the recall of 12 ANC ward councillors, who were part of a group of 16 expelled by the party for misconduct early last year.

Four of the 16 were proportional representative councillors, who have since been replaced.

Among those expelled were former Mbhashe mayor Mthetheleli Bele, former council speaker Phakamisa Madingana and some members of municipality’s executive council.

Mabuyane said the ANC was out to reclaim its seats during the upcoming by-elections.

“We know that there are opposition parties and independents standing to contest those wards.

“However, I am very confident we will squash them and reclaim those 12 wards and thus our grip on that council,” Mabuyane said.

About the January 8 Statement, Mabuyane said he expected Zuma to reflect on the party’s achievements since the advent of democracy in 1994.

“We expect the president to reflect on what we have done towards the realisation of policies in the Freedom Charter and what we need to do moving forward, especially in this crucial year where we also have national general elections scheduled.

“To us the January 8 Statement is like the State of the Nation Address.

“ It gives us direction on what needs to be done,” Mabuyane said.

Since 1972, the ANC has issued a statement outlining its programme for the year on or about January 8, the founding date of the ANC.

The ANC was founded on January 8, 1912.

During the height of the apartheid era such statements mapped out the main activities for the year ahead. This tradition has been maintained by the party since the first democratic elections in 1994. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
