Doctor will tickle your funny bone

AWARD-WINNING comedian Riaad Moosa, who played Ahmed Kathrada in the movie Long Walk to Freedom, will be in East London next week with his show Doctor’s Orders.

The medical doctor-turned-comedian is currently on a national tour with his show.

Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch, Moosa said he was looking forward to bringing his popular show to East London again. He was in the city with the same show last year.

“I had so much fun in East London the last time I was there.

“The show is generally the same but as comedians we do a lot of interactions with the crowd, it’s going to be different. It’s back by popular demand,” he said.

“Everyone will have a good time, it’s a family show. Although it’s not for children, parents can bring them. Generally, I rate my shows as PG.”

Moosa first burst onto the comedy circuit in the late 1990s and has not looked back.

He said the comedy industry had evolved over the years.

“Comedy has become one of the strongest forms of live entertainment in South Africa. Various forms of comedy have sprung up – different genres. Comedy clubs are emerging and different voices are out there. There is a lot of potential,” he said.

Moosa said compared to other countries, South African comedy was still growing.

“We are developing the industry here, we are part of the pioneers who are doing various shows,” he said.

He said in all his shows he had realised South Africans had a lot of things in common.

“Wherever I go, I try to incorporate local flavour but generally people laugh at the same things.”

The Indian-born doctor is the host of SABC3’s health and wellness television programme, Doctor’s Orders.

He has also been featured in the South African movie Material, for which he won a South African Film and Television Award for best actor.

Other achievements include the comic choice award at the 2011 annual South African Comics Choice Awards.
