Big break beckons for budding singer

MTHATHA-born singer Sibu Mbuku is on her way to stardom after making it to the top eight of SABC2’s I Want to Sing Gospel show.

A total of 15 contestants made it to the finals and now there are only eight left.

The winner of the reality show will receive R200000 and a recording deal.

Mbuku, who is a worship leader at Word and Worship Life Centre church in East London, is also a member of popular local gospel band Stand.

“I am enjoying the journey, it is awesome. It is not just about music but we also have life teachers who guide us on how to handle fame. They don’t just do that but they look into our lives,” Mbuku said of the competition.

She said the reasoning behind the one-on-one sessions was to help them deal with issues from the past.

“When you don’t deal with them, as a minister, it shows when you are hurting or not in the right place of God. They make sure we are in the right position to minister to people,” she said.

Mbuku, 24, said every week they are required to do activities and tasks. “With me they realised that my relations with people have been affected by the things I’ve gone through in life.”

She said she was assigned a task to make a friend on the show and to open up to that person.

“This helps us deal with things and last week we were talking about forgiveness. A person searched within whether they needed to forgive someone or ask for forgiveness,” she said.

Mbuku said the activities were also linked to the theme of the activities performed. Songs chosen by contestants for the week were about forgiveness. Mbuku said she grew up in a musical family.

“It was only in high school that I realised I could hold a note and when I was 19, I joined Stand,” she said.
