Pistorius introduced Reeva as fiancée to neighbour

OSCAR Pistorius introduced Reeva Steenkamp to his neighbour as his fiancée a few days before he shot and killed her in his Pretoria home.

Michael Nhlengethwa, who lives in the Silver Woods Estate, next to Pistorius’s house, told the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, yesterday of the one occasion he met Steenkamp.

Nhlengethwa’s wife, Eontle, and another neighbour who lives across the street, Ricca Motshwane, also testified in the athlete’s murder trial yesterday.

Pistorius, 27, shot Steenkamp, 29, his girlfriend at the time, through a toilet door in his home. He has said he thought she was an intruder but the prosecution says he intended to shoot her.

Nhlengethwa testified that he was outside his house when he saw Pistorius and Steenkamp walking to a white BMW parked outside Pistorius’s house.

They came over and Pistorius said there was someone he wanted Nhlengethwa to meet. “One thing that struck me about her … I will never forget it … when I put out my hand to greet her, she just opened her arms to hug me,” Nhlengethwa said.

“I could see the person that she was. I was touched. Oscar said: ‘Please meet my fiancée Reeva.’

“Reeva moved away towards the car. I said: ‘Oscar, this one is for keeps’.”

Nhlengethwa, who owns a civil engineering firm, said his wife had woken him up in the early hours of the morning on February 14 and told him she had heard a bang.

He then checked their house but could find nothing out of place.

He said they heard a man crying very loudly, like someone in danger.

Eontle said while her husband was checking the house, she heard what sounded like a man’s voice calling “help, help, help” very loudly. She said she did not hear a woman screaming or any more bangs.

Ricca Motshwane, a psychologist who works for the Department of Labour, told the court she was awoken that morning by the sound of a man crying.

“It was a cry of pain. It was very loud and very close,” she said.

She said she did not hear any gunshots or a woman’s screams.

The trial resumes tomorrow.
