Driver gunned down in cold blood

A 37-year-old man was gunned down in cold blood by unknown gunmen in Mthatha on Sunday.

The victim, who was reportedly inside his BMW X5 with his girlfriend at the time, was among at least three people shot and killed in separate incidents in Transkei over the weekend.

The shootings come days after police expressed concern that Mthatha was awash with illegal firearms.

Police spokesman LieutenantColonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the first incident happened at a B&B in Norwood suburb.

“We don’t know what the motive for the attack was and we don’t want to speculate,” he said.

The victim, who lived in Blakeway Street in the city centre, was reportedly trying to reverse his car when he was shot, according to Fatyela.

“One bullet pierced the window on the driver’s side and another hit the windscreen,” he said.

Shattered glass and blood stains were visible inside the car.

Fatyela said no arrests had been made and police were investigating a case of murder.

The victim has not been named since his family has not yet been informed.

In another incident, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed in Xhwili village near Mthatha on Saturday night. Fatyela said a suspect, aged 50, was arrested a day later.

A 9mm Norinco pistol with three rounds of ammunition was recovered from the suspect.

“The serial numbers were filed off the firearm which has been sent for ballistic tests,” said Fatyela

Two spent cartridges were found on the scene of the crime.

The man appeared in the Bityi Periodical Court on charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition yesterday.

Fatyela was unable to provide information on the outcome of the suspect’s court appearance at the time of going to print.

In the third incident, a 23-year-old man was gunned down following a quarrel with another man in Tsolo on Sunday shortly after 7pm.

Fatyela said a 26-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident. A 7.65mm pistol with three rounds was recovered from the suspect.

He appeared in the Tsolo Magi Court on charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition yesterday. —
