MaMbeki admitted to hospital

FORMER state president Thabo Mbeki’s mother has been admitted to an East London hospital after complaining of shortness of breath.

Epainette Mbeki, 98, was admitted to Life St Dominic’s Hospital early last week.

A source close to the Mbeki family yesterday confirmed to the Daily Dispatch that the anti-apartheid activist had been admitted to hospital.

“MaMbeki felt weak; it was as if she had shortness of breath,” said the source.

Late last night the Dispatch confirmed that her other son and Thabo’s brother, Moeletsi, visited her twice since her hospitalisation, however Thabo had not yet made a visit. Close family and relatives had come to come to see her.

Newly appointed provincial health MEC Dr Pumza Dyantyi was also a prominent visitor to the struggle stalwart.

Moeletsi declined to comment about his mother’s hospitalisation.

Life Healthcare’s Border-Kei regional spokeswoman Jackie Inglis said she could not answer questions sent by the Dispatch regarding MaMbeki’s condition while she is in hospital.

“Due to strict patient confidentiality and the Protection of Personal Information Bill, we are unable to assist you with your query,” Inglis said.

Any visitor to MaMbeki’s ward is required to report their presence to hospital management.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said he was not aware MaMbeki had been hospitalised.

“We cannot give out the health details of a private citizen. For those details you will have to contact the family of the former president.”

Piny, as she is affectionately known among close friends, was married to Govan Mbeki a Rivonia trialist who died in 2001 at the age of 91. She was born in a Sotho-speaking section of Mount Fletcher and spent most of her life without her husband and children because they were in exile. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za / siyab@dispatch.co.za
