Metro FM radio DJ Eddie Makhosonke Zondi has died, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said on Monday.
"We confirm as the SABC that we received the sad news that Eddie Zondi passed on this morning," spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said.
This was also confirmed by Metro FM Station Manager Martin Vilakazi, according to .
Kganyago could not confirm whether Zondi had died due to a heart attack, but MetroFM spokesperson Happy Ngidi, who was present when Zondi started to complain of chest pains, confirmed this.
Ngidi, who was at the family’s home in Ruimsig, west of Johannesburg, said Zondi, 47, complained of chest pains in the early hours of this morning and was rushed to hospital. He was declared dead on arrival, according to Destiny Man.
He is survived by his wife, Phakamile Zondi. The SABC sent its condolences to Zondi's family.
Zondi was an institution at Metro FM, hosting the hugely popular The Romantic Repertoire on Sundays from 3pm to 6pm and featured RnB classics, wrote Destiny Man. Outside of Metro FM, Zondi also released four compilation CDs titled Zondi’s Romantic Ballads.
The late DJ's name trended on Twitter in South Africa as news broke about Zondi's passing. South African celebrities took to Twitter to express their remorse at Zondi's loss, and express their condolences for his family.
Eastern Cape-born award-winning singer and songwriter Simphiwe Dana was one of the first to tweet about Zondi's death:
Ukhozi FM presenter Numfundo Mkhize similarly expressed her sense of loss upon hearing of Zondi's passing, comparing Zondi's death to that of SABC 2 breakfast show Morning Live's Vuyo Mbuli. Mbuli died in May last year as the result of a pulmonary embolism.
Multi-award winning musician Loyiso Bala similarly lamented Zondi's passing.
