T-SHIRTS meant to be distributed during the funeral of former president Nelson Mandela in December last year are still in KSD speaker Dumani Zozo’s office.

Zozo admitted to this during an ANC caucus meeting ahead of this week’s council meeting where mayor Nonkoliso Ngqongwas presented a report on the municipality’s expenditure for the Mandela funeral.

The ANC usually holds a meeting ahead of any council meeting to discuss matters beforehand. In the caucus, councillors asked where the T-shirts were and Zozo reportedly admitted the T-shirts made for local leaders had always been in his office and he had decided not to distribute them as they had arrived three months after the funeral.

When phoned by the Saturday Dispatch yesterday Zozo responded via a text message.

He wrote: “Obviously there must be accountability on late delivery particularly that the date of the funeral passed and (the T-shirts) were delivered thereafter for distribution to intended recipients.”

In Ngqongwa report it is stated that 1000 embroidered golf shirts were made for local, provincial and national leaders at a cost of R78200 by local company Ntutu & Mhlali.

Other shirts were made by Bravo Afrika as part of a R1.6-million tender for promotional material. Bravo Afrika made 12000 adult sized T-shirts and 3000 T-shirts for children.

Council chief whip Zanemvula Gusana said when Ngqongwa presented the report councillors noted golf shirts meant to be distributed to them.

“The speaker said there were T-shirts which arrived in his office after the funeral.

“He said he did not want to distribute the T-shirts and he did not know who brought them there.” This and other Mandela funeral-related expenses are now being investigated by public protector Thuli Madonsela after members of the community raised the issue with her during a community meeting in Mthatha last week.

A KSD spokesman had not responded to Dispatch questions at the time of going to print.
