Pan hopes to break into West African film market.

WELL known Eastern Cape actor Chumani Pan has just returned from West Africa where his latest movie Silver Rain was shot in Ghana.

The film follows the story of a poor girl who meets a boy from a wealthy part of town and together they set out to change their worlds.

They are both desperate to find love, but do so in all the wrong places.

Director Juliet Asante said the story was one of hope, pain and strength of the human spirit.

Pan, 28, who hails from Mooiplaas, plays the best friend of the lead male.

He was the only South African among the cast which included Joslyn Dumas, Belinda Baidoo and Elikem Kumordzie from Ghana, Enyinna Nwigwe and Uru Eke from Nigeria, Michael Bonney Bassey from Sierra Leone and Annabelle Thom from Kenya.

Pan, who returned from Ghana last week, said the call to star in the film had been unexpected.

“The production company doing the movie is based in Ghana and they contacted my agent and asked for my CV. They liked my look and the work that I’ve done and they cast me and flew me over,” he said.

Pan said he hoped the film would help him break into the West African film market.

He said the production team was still planning to come to South Africa to shoot more scenes.

“The movie will be released in West Africa but they are still looking at a way of releasing it all over the continent,” he said.

Pan has made a name for himself locally starring in television shows and South African movies.

These include Montana, Shooting stars, Bakgat 3, I now pronounce you black and white, End game and Free Willy 4.

Pan said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time shooting in Ghana.

“The experience was good but a little bit different from what we have here at home. The set crew was relatively small but they are very enthusiastic and willing to learn,” he said.

Silver Rain is the first movie in Ghana to be shot using a RED camera, a high quality camera recommended by many Hollywood filmmakers.

Pan said being a part of the film meant a lot to him.

“One of the main reasons I chose this acting craft is because I’m passionate about it and I’ve always wanted to travel the world and tell stories that connect people, stories that bring about positive change even if its in the smallest way, visual art is very powerful and it moves people,” he said.
