Debut video nets E Cape muso Satma nomination

AN EASTERN Cape musician’s journey to success is picking up speed with her debut music video up for a Satma award.

Thabisa “Thabz SoulStar” Mhlakulwana said the nominated song, Vula, is off her debut album The Journey which was released last year.

“The Journey is a compilation of old and new tracks all the way from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg. It is an album fused with different sounds and influences throughout my travelling,” said Mhlakulwana.

She said the video and song were old but had been rearranged to give them the flair they had now.

“The song is about your typical life in the township so to speak, where you find being robbed can be common.

“But it’s meant to be fun, it’s meant in a not so literal way as the lyrics put it, where I am merely asking for people to please open up their hearts to me,” she said.

Mhlakulwana said although she was born in Port Elizabeth she has strong ties with Port St Johns.

“First of all PE made me, so when I left it was not because I hated the place but because I wanted to become better.

“Port St Johns is my love, I can tell you that much – it is another place where I grew as a person,” she said.

Mhlakulwana, 29, and now based in Johannesburg, made it to the Idols Top 10 finals in 2012, but has been singing for over 12 years.

“I am very humbled to have been nominated for this category because I am aware of our rich culture and talent in South Africa as a whole and know that we have so many traditional musicians who are as talented.

“It reassures me that I am doing something right and there are people out there who listen and support my music and would love to see me go further in my career,” she said.
