VIDEO: Faku returns with latest album

Jazz legend to perform in EL.

POPULAR jazz composer Feya Faku will perform in East London this weekend as he returns to the city for a second appearance.

Faku will perform music from his latest album Feya Faku and the Spirit Jazz Orchestra at the Velvet Jazz Lounge.

The Port Elizabeth musician made a name for himself both nationally and internationally and has worked with world renowned musicians such as Dave Young, Gustavo Begalli, Larry Ridley, Colin Vallon, Frederic Ljungkvist and Paul Hanmmer.

Despite travelling the world over, he said East London was one of his favourite places to perform.

“I’ve always loved East London, there is something special about the place,” he said.

Faku added that he had a close relationship with local bands such as the Vuka Band.

Although Faku left the province when he was in his late teens he said it was always a pleasure to perform on home soil.

“I’ve been all around the world but I love coming home. Although I don’t get much opportunity to perform back home I still love it,” he said.

Faku’s musical career has taken him to places like Europe, Japan, South American and Cuba.

“I’ve been travelling a lot this year. In March I went to New York alongside Sibongile Khumalo. We played there and I also went to Holland as I have a connection with Dutch musicians. We have an exchange and later this year they will be coming to South Africa,” he said.

In his latest project, Spirit Jazz Orchestra, Faku worked with an 18-piece band.

For the East London performance he will be joined by Romy Brauteseth on bass, Kesivan Naidoo on drums and well-known pianist Nduduzo Makathini.

Faku has been in the music industry for more than 20 years and believes in imparting skills to the younger generation.

“I play with young musicians a lot, if they are talented. It is not about age, I was young at some point and I played with older people who embraced me. I do not agree with older musicians who put young musicians down,” he said.

Faku said jazz lovers attending his show would be treated to variety of his sounds from his first compilation to the latest.

Tickets for the event cost R120 and bookings can be made by calling 074-704-3176 or (043)722-1076. Doors open at 6pm for Saturday and Sunday events.
