Strong winds disrupt power

STRONG winds and lightning disrupted the electricity supply to about 10 000 households and businesses in  the Eastern Cape this morning.

By the  afternoon, at least 5 000 of the affected customers were back on line.

Eskom’s spokesman Zama Mpondwana said: “Eskom technicians are working hard to repair electricity disruptions to the remaining 5 000 affected households in  Alice, Debenek, Binfield, Hogsback and Dutywa.

“We appeal to affected customers for patience while we try to restore power to their areas. We also appeal to customers to treat all electrical connections, including low hanging or broken conductors, as live and dangerous and not to touch or move them”.

Disaster management Captain John Fobian said a team of provincial disaster management officers had been sent to the areas to assess the damage.

“Several houses have been damaged with some roofs blown away. We will only know the full extent of the damage when our officers return with a report in the next few days,” Fobian said.

No injuries or deaths have been reported as yet.

Eskom customers can contact their call centre number on 086 003 7566 (08600 Eskom) for all electricity-related queries.
