Education a tool for success: Zuma

Education must be used as an instrument to reverse the damage of apartheid, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"We must reverse the damage of apartheid and use education as an instrument of liberation and rid the country of disease... inequality and hopelessness," he said at the SA Democratic Teachers' Union congress (Sadtu) in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

Zuma said education was important to inculcate culture and tradition in the youth so as to build a new nation.

"Children need to know from a young age that we are a special people."

He said the youth needed to know about the history of the country to make it better.

"The ANC pulled millions out of poverty.... So much has been achieved, it's important for our children to understand our country and its people," said Zuma.

He acknowledged Sadtu's call for history to be made a compulsory subject at school.

"We need to raise our children to know where South Africa comes from," said Zuma.

"Children, black and white, need to understand their history, else you will have a society that is misdirected by other people."
