Rugby star hangs up boots for his music

A young rugby player’s keen interest in music recently saw him hang up his boots to strum his guitar and write songs.

Many know Wandile Mbambeni as a former Border Bulldogs scrumhalf, but the 21-year-old is now moving to a new rhythm as he launches his career as a singer.

Mbambeni played his last rugby match last year when the season ended.

This also saw him start something he would come to love and enjoy.

“It was by chance. I was looking for a holiday job, just to make some money. I went to Mugg&Bean and asked if I could set up my equipment there and sing.”

Mbambeni has not looked back since his performance at the Vincent Mugg&Bean last year and is looking forward to making music for a living.

“I am currently finishing up my EP (extended mixtape) which will be released at the end of this month or early November,” he said.

Asked if he would consider playing rugby again Mbambeni said he would only play socially.

“I love sport and I would probably go back in a social way, like playing a touch rugby tournament. I would do it for fun,” he said.

Mbambeni first played for Hudson Park High School’s first team at the age of 16.

“For the Border Bulldogs I was on their under-19 squad. I used to sing there and the guys would always say ‘quit rugby and sing man’ but I did not take them seriously,” he said.

Mbambeni has since performed in numerous places around Port Elizabeth where he is currently based.

His upcoming EP titled Home Grown is expected to be available online and will be sold at his gigs.

“The sort of feedback I get from people is powerful and I believe there is a market for me. I am looking at taking music as far as I can,” he said.
