Eastern Cape beauty Ziyanda Yako has been named one the new faces of international cosmetics brand Flori Roberts. The Grahamstown-born actor, who has already begun carving her name in both theatre and television, was thrilled last night when the announcement was made at a glittering event in Johannesburg.

Another Flori Roberts face is Rhythm City actor Amo Chidi, 24, who plays Reneilwe on the e.tv soapie.

Yako said the brand representatives liked her face as soon as her agent sent them her profile. “They wanted people with a personality, not just models but people who would be interesting to talk to about the product.

“The company provides us with make-up that goes with our skin,” she said.

“It’s not about looking like anyone else. I’m selling African beauty without all the extras. I get to tell people who look like me that they do not need to be like anyone else to be beautiful.

“Our beauty looks like me or like any woman in the street,” she said.

The Joza location-born actor said her passion for theatre had started during her primary school days at Clarendon.

“My mother took me to the National Arts Festival every year and I was fascinated by theatre stuff. Even at school I was part of the choir and did lots of art activities,” she said.

After matriculating at Glen High in Pretoria, Yako studied musical theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology. Some of the productions she was in during her varsity days include Urinetown, Celebration, Sweet Charity, and Rooikeppie en die Sewe Bergies. Her major professional role was in Footloose.

She has made an appearance on e.tv’s Scandal, and recently finished shooting a new Mzansi Magic movie, C Sharp, which is expected early next year.

Flori Roberts, begun in 1965, is the first cosmetics brand developed specifically for black women. It is in the same range as Black Opal, Iman Cosmetics and Black Up to mention a few. After five decades it now debuts in Africa.

The products are exclusive to Stuttafords stores. There are five in Johannesburg and one in Pretoria. —poliswap@dispatch.co.za
