Mandla’s lawyers fail to get charges dropped

Mandla Mandela took to the stand and testified in his assault case after magistrate Noluthando Conjwa ruled the state had a prima facie case against him this morning.

The ruling came as a blow to his lawyers who argued strongly for Conjwa to drop the charges against their clients “due to poor evidence, lack of credibility and contradictory testimony of the state’s four witnesses”.

He is represented by advocates Colin Garvey and Billy Gundelfinger. He is accused of assaulting a motorist,  Mlamli Ngudle, last year.

Mandla said Ngudle suffered no bruises and his face became dusty after he slapped him once with an open hand. His firearm was in a holster hidden under a shirt on his waist and was never used.

The case continues this afternoon. l For more on the case, get a copy of the Daily Dispatch tomorrow.
